Swimming Pool Boilers

Swimming Pool Boiler Installation and Maintenance

To make the most of your swimming pool, you’ll need to heat the water to an average temperature of 28°C. There are various ways to heat pools such using heat pumps, solar thermal, electricity, gas, LPG or oil boilers.
Why not call us today to see how we are able to help with your heating of your swimming pool, whether it be installation or maintenance of air source heat pumps, gas, LPG or oil boilers.

Swimming Pool Heat Pumps:

Pool heat pumps are one of the cheapest and more environmentally friendly ways to heat your pool all year round. They heat the pool slowly and usual take a 3-5 days to get up to temperature, but they are designed to be left operating 24 hours a day, so just topping up the pool water temperature.
A good quality and correctly sized swimming pool heat pump will typically save between 30% and 50% (in many cases more), of the heating fuel costs for an outdoor or indoor pool that is used from April to October in the UK. This means the cost of the unit is normally recovered within 4 years of operation and its saving you money for a lifetime thereafter.
On average Air Source Heat Pump’s are around 500% efficient at heating up swimming pools, this means for every 1kw of electricity used it can produce 5kw’s of heat. Depending on the ambient air temperature they can be even more efficient. When compared to gas or oil boilers, which operate at about 92% efficiency, you can see that huge savings on heating costs can be made.
A very important factor for a heat pump to effectively work is to have a good insulated pool cover and for the pool not to be sited within a high water table area.
When we get hot summers, the savings could be even greater, as the performance efficiency of a heat pump is dramatically increased as the air temperature increases. For example, if the air temperature is 15 degrees or over, £1 of electricity is converted to £5.50 of heating energy.
To work out how quickly it will take for a heat pump to pay for itself, work out your annual pool heating costs and take about 40% and compare this to the cost of an appropriate sized quality heat pump from Calorex.
If you plan on using your pool during the colder months of the year, you need to be aware that a normal air source heat pump is only efficient at certain temperatures (generally 10 degrees or above), so you will either need to have an alternative heat source (such as an oil or gas boiler) or you’ll need to invest in an something like a Calorex Y series ProPac all year heatpump. This would need to be sized and correctly specified for your project by Azure Pools, which are more expensive than normal heat pumps but are capable of working at very low temperatures. They can also be fitted and used in conjunction with a gas, LPG or oil boiler if required. The heat pumps we would recommend are either:

Indirect Pool Boilers

Standard boilers, such as Worcester Bosch, can be used to indirectly heat a separate heat exchanger, such as Bowman. This method requires a little more space, due to few items being required, but the boilers can also be used to generate heat for other systems like heating and hot water for your home, changing rooms or summer house.

Direct Pool Boilers

Standard boilers, such as Worcester Bosch, can be used to indirectly heat a separate heat exchanger, such as Bowman. This method requires a little more space, due to few items being required, but the boilers can also be used to generate heat for other systems like heating and hot water for your home, changing rooms or summer house.

We help change lives through everyday business activities, by giving to a project every time someone pays for a new boiler.

FAQs

What types of swimming pool heating systems do you install?

We install and maintain a range of swimming pool heating systems, including gas pool boilers, air source heat pumps, and hybrid setups. Our engineers recommend the best option based on your pool size, usage, and energy efficiency goals.

In many cases, yes. Heat pumps use renewable energy from the air to heat the pool and can significantly reduce running costs. Gas boilers, however, offer faster heat-up times. We can advise which system best suits your swimming habits.

Heating times vary depending on the system type, pool size, and outdoor temperature. Heat pumps generally warm the water gradually, while gas boilers heat more quickly. During a survey, we’ll estimate expected heat-up times for your setup.

Yes. We replace older pool boilers with modern, energy-efficient models or heat pumps. Our engineers handle the full process, including safe removal, installation, and setup.

We recommend an annual service to keep your system running safely and efficiently. Regular servicing helps maintain performance and prevents unexpected heating issues during peak swimming season.

Absolutely. Modern pool heat pumps are designed to operate efficiently even in lower outdoor temperatures. They may take longer to heat the water in colder months, but still provide reliable performance.

Yes. Many modern pool heating systems offer smart controls, allowing you to adjust temperature, timers, and system settings from your phone or tablet. We can install and set up compatible controls during your visit.

The right size depends on your pool’s volume, insulation, and how often you swim. Our engineers carry out a proper assessment to ensure your chosen system heats the pool quickly and efficiently without wasting energy.

Common causes include an undersized heater, poor pool insulation, heat loss through the cover, or a developing fault in the heating system. We can inspect your setup and diagnose the cause quickly.

Yes. We repair gas pool boilers, air source heat pumps, circulation issues, and control faults. Whether your system isn’t switching on or struggling to maintain temperature, our engineers can get it working again.
